Edge Banding Adhesives

Companies with a large demand for edge sealing use edge sealing machines to apply an adhesive of edge sealing material to the substrate of the work surface.

There are at least four methods of applying edge sealing.

Hot melt adhesive

Hot air / laser

Laser edge sealing

Hot melt sealing

Hot Melt Edgebanding

Hot melt sealing is the most common method of edge sealing used by manufacturers. Applying hot melt glue requires a glue cartridge or canister.

The meaning of hot melt edge sealing is self-explanatory.

The adhesive on the edge sealing strip material is heated and then applied to the edge of the laminate.

There are many types of adhesives used in the application of edge sealing tape. The following are the most common ones.

Hot air / laser edge sealing

The back side of the edge sealing material is heated to form a bond with the substrate. There are no glue lines because no glue is involved.

It is a misnomer to refer to this method as "hot melt laser". No real laser is used, but the name is a tribute to the fact that hot air achieves invisible edges, just like a laser edge sealer.

Visually, there is no difference between the hot air/laser process and laser edge sealing.

Ironing edges does not require any specialized tools or skills. It is a simple manual process in which the sealing material is applied to the substrate with an iron.

After heating and pressure, the glue is cooled enough for a hobby knife or chisel to trim excess material from the edging tape.

Laser Edgebanding

HSHDECOR was the first CHINA supplier to offer adhesive-free laser edging. Using a combination of two layers of proprietary polypropylene and a laser, a permanent, seam-free bond is created between the edging strip and the substrate.

Bill Knighton was an early proponent of hot air edging. Bill decided to make  the standard for all RightAngle products.

The hot air method results in a virtually invisible seam edge. The result is an increased appearance and protection of the work surface and a fully recyclable, halogen-free, odorless, neutral polypropylene material.

What began thousands of years ago as a stone surface evolved into the work surface seen today.

As solid wood became man-made wood, the need to cover and protect edges progressed at the same time.

What craftsmen spent time working with hand tools became less expensive for mass production.

Rather than being ignored, edge sealing became ubiquitous and a key element of a quality work surface.

Edge seal material

Recall that the edges of man-made boards are ugly and rough. The purpose of edge sealing is to give the appearance of a solid piece of wood and to protect the substrate from warping.

In a future article, we will rank the top five edge sealing materials.

But for now, let's start with a brief overview of a few of the most common materials.

Polypropylene (PUR) is completely recyclable, harmless and odorless. PP is made entirely from petroleum and is a neutral synthetic material.

Polyurethane is rolled at high temperatures, dries quickly, and cures to full strength within a few days. It is a powerful glue that can handle high and low temperatures, but determining its drying time can be tricky. Nonetheless, PUR is characterized by its resistance to moisture up to 302 ºF.

In addition to being the most environmentally friendly wrapping material, PP has several other advantages.

Halogen free

Higher resistance to UV fading

Very resistant to high temperatures

Low shrinkage

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is a thermoplastic polymer that is very popular and a green material.

ABS responds well to heat, is malleable at higher temperatures, and becomes hard when cooled.

Because it can be recycled, it is included in the green category. If it is burned, the gas produced is harmless.

Polyvinyl chloride

Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is the most common and least expensive plastic on the planet. Technically, it is a synthetic plastic polymer with a composition flexible enough to be spooled into thread.

Although PVC can be recycled, the gases produced by burning are harmful to the environment. It also takes longer to decompose, making PVC one of the least green edge sealing materials.

Melamine is a special type of paper that is saturated and covered with lacquer. The addition of lacquer increases the resistance and strength of the paper.

Not durable

Best used in low-traffic areas

Despite the addition of lacquer, melamine is still paper.

Not waterproof

T-molded plywood

T-molding is an edge sealing material that requires a groove in the substrate to accommodate the T-seal. It is a very tight fit, so T-molding needs to be lightly tapped into place.

While T-molding looks better on first use, it doesn't last. Shredded edges, visible seams, and zero water resistance are the biggest drawbacks to using T-molding.

Wood veneer edging is made from thin pieces of wood that have been pre-sanded and layered. It can be finished or unfinished, depending on its application.
